Influence that impacts one’s future choices, understanding of others without explanation, a welcoming presence that provides comfort: these are all qualities within a leader. Being a leader can be difficult at times, but the results are incredibly rewarding. Without leaders in our lives, we wouldn’t have unique personalities and beliefs. Leaders are imperative in the transformation of humans young and old, and it can all be done through inspiration. I have been lucky enough to be a leader in numerous instances over the past couple of years. One being the founder and president of the Improv Club at Indian Hills. Comedic acting and writing is one of my passions, but that is not at all what my thought process was when developing this club. I wanted to create a safe environment where people can feel free to express themselves and only do what they are comfortable with. I think by creating such a friendly, welcoming, low pressure environment, we have attracted people from all walks of life. I’d like to think I have taught them something about the art of improvisational acting, but their bravery and drive has also inspired me. I think that is another crucial aspect of leadership. Even though you may be leading the group, the group can also inspire you. The respect given from both ends, is something so special and the valuable lessons learned by both the leader and those being led, is incomparable to anything else. I think that because I acknowledged their ability to inspire me, a stronger connection was built with students of all grade levels. I am grateful to be a leader, and for the opportunity to take something I love and motivate others. There isn’t a more fulfilling way to spend my time.
